Rebel

I once watched my senior manager get called “Little Catherine” by her peer, and I was genuinely horrified. I didn’t dare ask her why she didn’t say something. I once let someone say to me when I couldn’t find my way around the latch on their yard door: Oh I thought you were supposed to be Asian! You aren’t offended, right, we’re friends?

Ma’am, I was very offended, and we are not friends. But at the time I couldn’t muster the courage to speak up. It’s been years since that incident and I still think about it. Asian women at work, frankly in all spheres of life are “supposed to be workhorses, lacking personality and easy to steamroll”. No more. 2020 lit a fire inside me and there will be no snuffing it out.
